iOS 6, Apple’s latest version of the intuitive mobile operating system, is now available to download. The 6 iteration of the OS comes packed with over 200 new features, some include:
Apple, have updated the built-in maps application to feature their own mapping software, ditching the infamous Google Maps. Apple’s own maps has been re-designed from the ground up. The maps themselves are vector-based so the map looks crisp and text in unbelievably clear and easy-to-read. You can also ‘flyover’ a city, in a 3D view. This 3D view allows you to do a full 360 degree turn around a building and tilt up and down. Apple have also introduced turn-by-turn navigation into the application, so you can get spoken directions to where you want to go.
Siri, has been updated to include results for Sports, Films and Restaurants. You can ask Siri to see if your favourite football team won at the weekend, and see what films are playing at your local Cinema. You can also find reviews, photos and Yelp ratings for your favourite restaurant, you can also make reservations straight from Siri.
Facebook, the biggest social network, is now fully integrated into the os. You can share Safari web pages, Photos and post status updates anywhere there is a share button. You can update your status by pulling down notification center and tapping the button. You can share a holiday snap from the photos app straight to Facebook, and you can like and share apps and songs in the iTunes Store.
Shared Photo Streams
You can now share your photos to contacts with Shared Photo Streams. Your friends can like and comment on the photos your share and you can do the same. You also receive a push notification when your friends add new photos to the Shared Photo Stream. You can also view a web version of the photo stream on your laptop of computer.
Passbook, is an app that holds all of your coupons, boarding passes, tickets and Starbucks cards in one easy to see place. With Passbook, you can scan your iPhone or iPod Touch to get onto a flight, into a film and to get a cup of coffee. You can also see when the cards expire and shred them when they do. Passes also appear on the lock screen when you reach the airport or when you walk into a cinema or shop. And if the gate changes at the last second, Passbook will automatically update the ticket.
Facetime has now been updated to work over a cellular connection as well as a Wi-Fi connection, so you can video chat with your friends or loved ones whenever and wherever you want.
iOS 6 now adds new calling features to your iPhone. You can decline a phone call and instantly send a text or set a call-back reminder. And, if things are way too busy, you can turn on Do Not Disturb and not be disturbed – unless it is an important contact like your boss or partner.
Mail has been re-designed with a more streamlined interface for easier reading and writing. Mail in iOS 6 allows you to set up a VIP inbox to show emails from your very important contacts; like your boss, partner or best friend. It is now event easier to add photos and videos to an email, and you can now pull to refresh your inbox.
Safari, now has a feature called iCloud tabs, that lets you sync your open tabs across your Apple devices; like your Mac, iPad and iPhone. Safari also now saves whole web pages, instead of links, to Reading List so you can now read articles and web pages offline. You can also post and take photos and video inside Safari and upload them to sites like eBay and Craigslist. If your device is in landscape, you can also enter full screen mode to view web pages without distractions.
iOS 6 comes with a brand new feature, Guided Access. Guided Access allows you to disable the home button in apps, so children can focus on content. You can also restrict touch input in certain part of the screen.
The Camera app has been updated, and includes a new Panorama feature. You can now capture a whole landscape in one image, just by moving your phone across the view. With one simple motion you can shoot up to 240 degrees – vertically and horizontally – and software and hardware work together to create one seamless photo.
Apple have also re-designed the iTunes Store, iBooks Store and App Store to match the newly re-designed store in the new version of iTunes.
You can get iOS 6 right now over-the-air or through iTunes by plugging in your device or by going to Settings -> General -> Software Update.
