At an event in Cupertino today, Apple finally announced the upcoming iterations of iPhone after months of leaks and rumours. The iPhone now comes in 2 sizes – The iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus.

The smaller of the two – the iPhone 6 – has a 4.7-inch display that is notably larger than the 4-inch iPhone 5. It still has a Retina resolution of 1334 x 750 pixels providing 326 pixels per inch and a wider angle of view. It has a new curved design that is reminiscent of the iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina Display. It’s only 6.9mm thick – the thinnest device Apple has ever made. The power button has moved from the top to the side so you can actually reach it.

Inside the iPhone 6 is the new A8 processor which is 25% faster that the A7 that preceded it. It also packs a 505 faster graphics chip. The A8 is also accompanied by the M8 motion co-proccessor, a second generation version of the previous M7 chip. The new M8 is capable of distinguishing between running and cycling, it can also measure how many flights of stairs you climb.

Even though the device is larger, battery life hasn’t been improved that much. Apple claims that the iPhone 6 will offer 14 hours of talk time, a 40 percent increase over the iPhone 5S. But web browsing time over 3G and LTE is still only at 10 hours, and video playback time is 11 hours, only one hour longer than the 5S.

The iPhone 6 supports LTE advanced, which allows for speeds up to 150mbps. It also supports 802.11ac Wi-Fi networks and Apple says that Wi-Fi in the iPhone 6 is three times faster.

The camera is still 8-megapixels – the same as the 4s and the 5 – but it uses a brand new sensor and even larger pixels than before. It is paired with a f/2.2 aperture lens and a dual-LED flash. The iPhone 6 has digital image stabilisation however it’s bigger sibling – the iPhone 6 Plus – has optical stabilisation. The autofocus system is apparently twice as fast as the 5S and face detection is smarter and faster. The iPhone 6 also offers advanced processing algorithms to improve detail, contrast, and sharpness in photos. Panoramic pictures can now be up to 43 megapixels in size the iPhone 6 can take HDR photos in just one shot.

Video recording has been upgraded as well, the iPhone 6 can record 120 or 240 frames per second slow-motion video and 1080p video at 30 or 60 frames per second.

The front facing camera also has a new sensor and a brighter f/2.2 aperture to take brighter selfies.

The device includes NFC for Apple’s new Apple Pay – its own mobile payment service.

The iPhone 6 and 6 plus will launch with iOS 8 that has a number of improvements over iOS 7. It comes in three colours; gold, silver and space grey. In three capacities; 16GB, 64GB and 128GB. You can pre-order the devices this Friday, September 12th and they will be available September 19th.
