Google’s Chromecast is by far the most popular HDMI dongle out there but Microsoft will soon be entering the market with its Wireless Display Adapter.[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaWRJtn7zFc]
The device’s premise is the same as the Chomecast; wirelessly sending the thing that you are viewing on your laptop, phone or tablet onto the TV. It also is USB powered but it seems that it needs it to function unlike the Chromecast (on certain TVs). Google uses its own Cast technology but Microsoft are adopting Miracast technology to make the dongle work.
The protocol is already used in various Windows and Android hardware, and it is system wide. App developers don’t need to add support per app – like the Chromecast. Miracast uses Wi-Fi Direct so the device may not need the internet to work.
The Microsoft adapter will retail for $60 – no UK pricing has been announced yet.
